Benefits of Clean Your Air Duct System

Indoor Air Quality

Indoor air quality is one concern that homeowners have when they decide to investigate air duct cleaning. In a typical six-room home, up to 40 pounds of dust is created annually through everyday living. Your heating and cooling system is the lungs of your home. The system taken air in and breathes air out.  Through normal occupation in a home, we generate a great deal of contaminants and air pollutants, such as dander, dust, and chemicals. These contaminants are pulled into the HVAC system and re-circulated 5 to 7 times per day, on average. Over time, this re-circulation causes a build-up of contaminants in the duct work.  While dirty ducts don’t necessarily mean unhealthy air in your home, school or workplace, they may be contributing to larger health issues or harboring contaminants that could cause serious problems for people with respiratory health conditions, autoimmune disorders or some environmental allergies.

Energy Savings

According to the National Air Duct Cleaners Association (NADCA), 25 to 40 percent of the energy used for heating or cooling a home is wasted. Contaminants in the heating and cooling system cause it to work harder and shorten the life of your system. Although filters are used, the heating and cooling system still gets dirty through normal use.  When an HVAC system is clean, it doesn’t have to work as hard to maintain the temperature you desire. As a result, less energy is used, leading to improved cost-effectiveness.

Reasons to Clean Your Air Ducts

  • They have never been cleaned before – Most homes have never had their air ducts cleaned. Indoor air may be up to 70 times more polluted than outside air.
  • Allergies – Dust and other contaminates are actually pulled into your furnace system through the return air side of the system. Heating air ducts systems provide ideal breeding grounds for bacteria, mold, fungi, and other allergens. As an example: dust mites breed in temperatures between 72 and 86 degrees.  Children under four (with immature immune systems) are particularly under attack and the result may be allergies or asthma. Seattle Healthy Projects reports. “New research indicates if children do not come into contact with Asthma triggers between birth and 4 years old they may never develop asthma.
  • A flooded basement – If you have had a wet, damp, or flooded basement in the past, mold and mild could be growing in your HVAC system.
  • Pests – Sometimes unwanted occupants move into your ducts.  You will want to clean out all those living and dead spiders, insects and rodents that have been living, and dying in your ducts for years.
  • Remodeling – If you have completed a remodeling project, your air duct system could be full of “remodeling dust” that will circulate in your ducts for years.
  • Pets – As much as we love our furry friends, pet hair can get caught in the vents of your air ducts system and provide a foundation for the build up of living germs, fungus, allergens, mold and mildew.
